Well I decided this year (since I have a little more daily freedom and some time on my hands) to volunteer a day to my childrens school. I am now a Tuesday Kindergarten Mom.
At first I thought OMG! This is complete chaos and insanity Why did i offer to do this?
The girls every morning are lined up at the door to the school, single file, waiting for the teacher 10 minutes before the bell rings. The boys on the other hand are chasing each other all over, rolling around in the dirt, and doing lots of odd things to amuse each other, all while using the same phrase " Look what i can do !"most of this odd behavior results in a skin knee or two.
The bell rings and they walk into the hall and into the classrooms only to rummage into bookbags and toss sweatshirts and jackets all over the place. The teacher claps her hands a few times and they all find a small bit of morning calm and go to the tables quietly chatting and giving the update of what they did after school yesterday.
The teacher gets a phone call and asks me to keep an eye on them for a few minutes while she runs to the office to pick up some papers........ I said yes but she giggled at the look of fear in my eyes and I said " Sure go do what you have to do ... Do they bite? " She laughed and repiled " A little but don't worry most of them are missing teeth or the teeth they have are a bit wiggly it doesn't hurt much if they do."
Needless to say i survived the few minutes alone with the nibblers and i had a good day full of 5 year old wisdom, and got a peek of the outlook on life these little ones had.
So here is a small list of what i learned in Kindergarten yesterday.
Books are very cool ..... especially if you have someone to read them to you
Missing teeth ..... to adults might be a sign of poverty or bad dental habits but in Kindergarten it is a status symbol of wealth and good toothfairy fortune.
Recess Rocks!!!! ... it is amazing the things you could do with a hula hool jump rope an a few good friends everyone needs a recess once a day to show the world WHAT YOU CAN DO ! even if you skin a knee.
Spelling and grammar doesn't always count......My mom bakes cookies.
Can be written a hundred different ways but as long as you got a cool picture of her making them to go along with it and a story of it in your heart who cares if my mom bak cokys or even kokes.
If you got to pee and the bathroom door is broken it is ok to ask a friend for help, and hold the door for her when she needs it.
I will be going back next Tuesday because i think i can learn a lot from these wise little pumpkin faces and they might even inspire me to use this journal more often. In Kindergarten it is also very cool to keep a daily journal misspellings and all.
